Meet the Founder – Sophia
Sophia’s journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and excellence.
From her early days as a young immigrant navigating a new country to becoming a trailblazer in the global legal arena, Sophia has continually redefined success. Today, she is the founder of Joyce Xu Law and Sophia Media, where she combines her passion for storytelling, leadership, and meaningful conversation to inspire audiences around the world.
Sophia arrived in the United States from China at the age of 14, facing the challenges of a new country, a new culture, and a new language. She reunited with her parents, who had immigrated several years earlier. At the time, her father was pursuing a Ph.D., and the family lived together in a single room in graduate student housing. Although money was scarce, hope and determination were abundant.
Against the odds, Sophia quickly became fluent in English, excelled academically, earned an honors degree in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University, and later graduated with honors from Columbia Law School in 2000.
After law school, Sophia built an exceptional legal career at some of the world’s leading law firms, establishing herself as one of the foremost attorneys in the complex field of derivatives law. Her talent, leadership, and dedication culminated in a rare achievement: in 2010, she became an equity partner at one of the nation’s most prestigious law firms.
After fourteen years as an equity partner and practice leader at elite global firms, Sophia made the bold decision to leave Big Law and build something of her own. She founded Joyce Xu Law, creating a practice centered on excellence, innovation, and client service, while also launching Sophia Media, a platform dedicated to authentic storytelling and meaningful conversations.
Through Sophia Media, she serves as the creator and executive producer of several original podcast series. She hosts The Real Lawyer, where she explores the personal stories behind accomplished legal professionals and reveals the human side of the legal profession. She also created Good Morning, Beloved, a podcast focused on personal growth, healing, and intentional living. Most recently, she launched the My First Year podcast collection, featuring conversations about life’s transformative first-year experiences—from becoming a parent to starting college, immigrating to a new country, and other defining transitions that shape who we become.
Today, Sophia continues to balance her work as an attorney, entrepreneur, storyteller, and media producer. She lives in beautiful South County, Rhode Island, with her beloved golden retriever, Otis Patrick. Whether practicing law, producing podcasts, or building communities through conversation, Sophia is committed to helping others navigate change, discover purpose, and realize their fullest potential.
